Two months ago I poured the concrete countertops but like most things lately, I just got around to finishing the job yesterday. It was like going back to childhood when I made mud pies and played in the dirt and I quite enjoyed it. Of course I obsessed about things going wrong and it not looking like I wanted it to, but in the end it’s done and it looks more permanent than our plywood counter that has served us well for the past 8 months.
Here is one of the forms prior to filling with concrete. I spread beach glass around the bottom of the form which is actually the top of the counter.
Another form filled with mud pie goodness.
After they set up for 3 days I got to work grinding to expose the glass. It also exposed a lot of voids and “bug holes”.
The holes were filled and the slabs polished before sealing them with a food friendly sealer.
And the final results . . .
This project really didn’t take all that long, it just got stalled at various stages.
I still managed to get out for a couple of beach walks and on one of them I stumbled upon this creepy thing staring back at me. Good thing I took a picture because the tide came in and it was never to be seen again.
We had our annual family visit and took the ladies out to San Josef Bay to explore some areas we haven’t been to yet. It’s nice out there but the road in could knock your fillings out. Poor little truck got all rattled and filthy!
This is probably the last of the house building/ BC exploring posts for now since we are less than 4 weeks away from our extended leave of absence. I hope to be able to keep the blog updated with all the awe and wonder we experience along the way. So here’s to new adventures in new countries! (not that our own isn’t awesome).
Wow Jen, they turned out fabulous!!! Everything looks so great in your home. Hope all the trip plans are made and in place and you both have an amazing time, looking forward to the blogs. Love AT
Now where are you off to?? You just got your lovely little house all finished and now you’re leaving it?
Love the pictures of the beach. If/when you’re back there, I’d love to come for a visit.
Take care, Jenn! Pat
